It’s Not About You! Shift Your Focus: Help Them Don’t Sell to Them

How can I sell to my potential clients? This is the number one question we need to ask when marketing, right? Wrong. The days of only selling TO potential clients have passed, especially when it comes to the social networking side of the business.

“The days of only selling TO potential clients have passed”

Instead of asking how we can sell our products or services to another client or company, we need to try shifting our focus. It’s no longer a “what can they buy from me or do for me” mentality, it now needs to be a “how can I help THEM” mentality.

Not following? Take this example, let’s say I have a cleaning company. In the past I would advertise my services, sell my packages and only talk about those services. My entire marketing plan would have centered around letting people know what they can buy from me and how they can buy it, but not anymore.

The rise of social media has given us the opportunity to be so much more for our clients. Now for example, with my cleaning company I can shift my focus to helping potential clients. I can share cleaning tips, connect with other services people might need that are related to what I can do for them. I can help the community by volunteering to clean up a park, for example, and share that experience on social media. I can create connections with individuals and companies to provide the best service offerings possible.

“The rise of social media has given us the opportunity to be so much more to our clients.”

Perhaps the best part of the prevalence of social media platforms is that you have the opportunity to connect, in real time, with your clients and potential customers. This allows you to really zero-in on what it is that your clients want and need, which then allows you to plan how you’re going to provide them with the best products and services possible.

Marketing used to be a one-way street, now it’s more like one of those insane roundabouts in the middle of a busy city; it’s a constant feed-back loop with ample opportunity to understand and serve the needs of your clients.

“Marketing used to be a one-way street, now it’s more like one of those insane roundabouts in the middle of a busy city…”

When you shift your focus from wondering how you can get people to buy from you to how you can help your clients within their lives, that’s where the magic happens. Trust me.

Now get out there and see what you can do for your target market today, you won’t regret shifting your focus!
